In the climate of the Paris Agreement, the Ministry of Environment (MMA) of Brazil and the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) reaffirmed at a meeting on 13 April in Brasilia, that its efforts prioritize forest restoration and sustainability in Amazon.
According to the executive secretary of the MMA, Carlos Klink, in addition to combating illegal logging of vegetation, Brazil will focus on restoration policies. “We want to be also the country of the reforestation,” he said.
Of the eight countries that share this biome and are part of ACTO, all supported the proposed initiatives. For the secretary general of the organization, Jacqueline Mendoza Ortega, it is essential that the policy sharing by all nations involved: Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname and Venezuela, as well as Brazil.
The goal of the MMA is to continue to reduce Amazon illegal deforestation rates in the country. In 2015, the decline was 79% compared to the indicators of 2004. In addition to this action, the intention is to establish an economy based on the forest standing value. According to Klink, the result of these policies has global importance.
“You can work protection together with the production of wealth,” he added about the establishment of the bioeconomy.
